Tick Tosh - Most commonly held myths

TickMyth 1: - Lyme disease isn't in the UK!
Brace yourself....it's in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland forget the New Forrest!.....it's common sense...bugs don't know boundaries.

TickMyth 2: - Lyme always has a bulls-eye rash!
You wish....70% of people infected with Lyme never get a rash. Never!!

TickMyth 3: - You can feel the tick bite you!
Not likely....the tick anaesthetizes your skin as it bites you....you will never know it happened unless it's in a place you can see it.

TickMyth 4: - Ten days of antibiotics will cure you!
Wrong....a longer term of antibiotics is needed.

TickMyth 5: - If you test negative for Lyme you don't have it!
Really Wrong....the Lyme serology (ELISA) test is unreliable with false negatives AND positives….at least 40% of the time....A doctor who knows about Lyme determines whether you have it based on symptoms and history not a single test.

TickMyth 6: - You can't get Lyme from someone else!
Unproven....research is pointing to sexual transmission and of that of mother to baby...have a look at Dr Harvey’s paper on www.canlyme.org

TickMyth 7: - My doctor recognizes Lyme!
It's a Lottery....unless you go to a Lyme literate doctor you stand a good chance of being misdiagnosed and treated for other conditions....such as....Flu, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, ME, Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, heart conditions, Migraines, seizure disorders, chemical sensitivities, panic attacks, psychological issues, Gulf War Syndrome, Bells Palsy, ALS, Lupus etc, etc....

The average time from the onset of symptoms to the diagnosis of Lyme disease can be four and a half years....it needn’t be if your first port of call is a Lyme literate Doctor.
